When to buy laptops, phones and TVs for the best price

A sale date is a clue, not a guarantee. Here’s when to start looking for each device and how to check whether the price is worth your attention.

Start with the device and your timing

Look for a useful sale window, then check the exact device—not just the big sale sign. A laptop deal may be easiest to spot during back-to-school season, while a phone launch can be a good reason to look at the previous model. For TVs, late November and Super Bowl season are worth a look. [0][2][6]

Your timing matters, too. If your laptop works fine and you can wait, make a shortlist and watch prices. If you need a phone now, compare the options available now. A possible future sale is not much help when you need a working device today.

When should you shop for a laptop?

Start with late November. Black Friday week is a major laptop sale period. Back-to-school shopping, from late July to early September, is another window to check, especially if you’re shopping for a student. [0][4]

Before you browse, write down what the laptop needs to do. Is it for schoolwork, video calls, games or a mix? Note the screen size and other features you want, then compare laptops that meet those needs. A lower price on the wrong setup isn’t much of a win.

Keep an eye on model names and numbers, too. Two laptops with similar names may have different configurations. Check the details you care about, such as storage and memory, before treating them as the same deal.

Can a new phone launch unlock a deal?

It can be a useful time to look. After a new flagship phone launches, previous-generation models may drop in price. November is another period to watch for phone discounts and trade-in offers. [6][7]

First, decide whether you need the newest model. If the previous version has the features you want, add it to your shortlist. Compare the exact storage size and any carrier requirements rather than relying on the headline offer.

Trading in your old phone? Read the offer details before you count its value. Check the required condition, how the trade-in value is applied and whether the offer depends on a particular plan. If a deal involves bill credits, check their timing and what happens if you leave the plan.

Then compare that offer with buying without a trade-in. The best-looking headline is not always the simplest option for your household.

When should you look for a TV?

Late November is a major TV shopping window. January and February, around Super Bowl season, are also worth checking, particularly if you’re open to a previous-year model. [2][3]

Pick your size before you chase a sale. Measure the space and think about where the TV will sit. Then check the model number, screen type and connections you need. A similar-looking TV in the right size is not necessarily the same model.

Compare the price of that exact model across stores. If you’re looking at an older model, check that its features suit you rather than buying it just because it’s older. You’re shopping for a TV, not a calendar date.

Check the model, trade-in and final cost

A sale label is your starting point. Look up the exact model in a price-history tool, if one is available, and compare its current price at other retailers. Prices change, so a little checking can put the advertised deal in context. [1]

Next, follow the offer through checkout. Look for shipping, taxes, required accessories or a service plan, and include any trade-in conditions. If an offer comes as a bundle, ask whether you actually want the extras.

Finally, read the return policy and warranty details. Check the return window, the condition required for a return and any fees. A deal should still make sense after you’ve read the small print.

Spot it

  • Pick the device and features you need before browsing.
  • Watch a useful shopping window, but buy when your timing makes sense.
  • Compare the exact model and check its price history.
  • Read trade-in, plan and bundle terms before counting their value.
  • Check the final cost, returns and warranty.
