How to save on rental cars and avoid surprise fees

A low rental rate is a start, not the finish line. Compare the full cost, check your coverage and make a plan for pickup and return.

In this guide
  1. Start with the full rental price
  2. Compare airport and off-airport pickups
  3. Check direct rates and membership perks
  4. Review coverage before the counter
  5. Plan for fuel, tolls and vehicle photos
  6. Spot it

The number in big type can look like a deal. The number at checkout is the one to watch. Taxes, location fees and extras can push a rental car’s total above its base rate.

Your mission: compare the same kind of car for the same trip, then check what’s included before you book. A few minutes of detective work can help you spot costs that don’t belong in your plans.

Start with the full rental price

Start a quote with your actual pickup and return times. Then look past the base rate for taxes, fees and any extras you need. Fuel and coverage options can add to the total, too.

Before you compare two quotes, make sure they cover the same dates, car category, drivers and pickup and return locations. If one quote includes an extra and the other doesn’t, adjust your comparison.

Also read the booking terms. Check whether you pay now or later, what happens if your plans change and which charges may be due at pickup. Save the quote and its terms so you can check them against the agreement at the counter.

Compare airport and off-airport pickups

An airport pickup is handy, but airport locations can add facility and concession fees. An off-airport location may have a lower rate. That doesn’t automatically make it the better deal.

Get a full quote for each location. For the off-airport option, add the cost of getting there and back, such as a taxi or rideshare. Check the location’s hours against your travel plans, too.

Now compare the real choices: airport total versus off-airport total plus transportation. If the gap is small, you might decide the easier pickup is worth it. If it’s larger, the extra trip may earn a place in your plan.

Check direct rates and membership perks

A comparison site can give you a starting point. Once you’ve found a quote that fits, check the rental company’s own site for the same trip. Compare the full price and terms, not just the first number you see.

Next, check memberships you already have. Some programs offer rental discounts or perks, such as an additional driver or a waived fee. Look at the eligibility rules and the final quote to see whether a perk applies to your booking.

A pay-now option may have a different rate from a pay-later option. Before choosing, check the cancellation and change terms. A lower quote is less useful if the terms don’t fit your plans.

Review coverage before the counter

The counter is a busy place to sort out coverage. Before your trip, review your personal auto policy and any credit card rental benefits you might use. Some cards provide collision coverage, but the terms matter.

Ask your insurer or card provider what applies to your rental, which drivers are covered and what steps are required. Then review the rental company’s coverage options and their costs. If you’re unsure what protection fits your situation, talk with a qualified insurance professional.

At pickup, check the agreement before signing. Make sure any coverage or extras on it match what you chose. If something is unclear, ask for an explanation before you drive away.

Plan for fuel, tolls and vehicle photos

Fuel and toll options can add charges, so read the terms before choosing them. If your agreement calls for a full tank at return, plan time to fill up near the drop-off location. Ask how tolls are handled and what fees apply to the rental company’s toll service.

Before leaving the lot, inspect the car inside and out. Photograph any marks or damage and make sure they’re noted with the rental company. Take photos again when you return it. Keep your booking details and return paperwork with those photos in case you need to review a charge later.

Spot it

  • Compare full quotes for the same trip and car category.
  • Add transportation costs to any off-airport quote.
  • Check the direct rate and perks from memberships you already have.
  • Review coverage and booking terms before pickup.
  • Plan for fuel and tolls, and photograph the car at pickup and return.
