How to compare phone plans and spot hidden costs
A low advertised rate is only the starting point. Check your usage, coverage and full bill before you choose a phone plan.

In this guide
Look past the big number in the ad. The plan worth considering is one that covers your data needs, works where you use your phone and fits your household’s full budget.
Your detective kit is simple: a recent bill, your data usage and a quote for each plan. Here’s where to look before you make a move.
Start with your bill and data use
Pull up a recent bill and find the total you actually pay. Note the number of lines, the plan charge and any separate charges. If you have a phone payment or add-ons, jot those down too.
Next, check your data usage with your provider. Look at each line, not just the household total. Comparing your use with a plan’s allowance can help you decide whether you need unlimited data or whether a smaller allowance is enough.
Use more than one month if you can. A quiet month at home may not tell the same story as a month with travel. Note any needs you expect to change, too.
Check coverage, hotspot use and line needs
A tempting rate is less useful if service doesn’t work where you need it. Check the provider’s coverage information for home, work, school and other places you regularly visit.
Then check the details behind the data. If you use your phone as a hotspot for another device, look for the hotspot allowance and any limits. Also ask how the plan handles data when the network is busy; plans can differ in network priority.
Comparing plans for a household? Use the same number of lines in each quote. Multi-line discounts can change the cost per line.
If you want to keep your current phones, check that each one is compatible with the provider before switching. Ask the provider if you’re unsure.
Add up the full monthly cost
Now for the number that matters: the total bill. Ask for a quote that includes every line, estimated taxes and fees, device payments and any extras you plan to keep. Some plans include taxes and fees in the advertised price; others list them separately.
Put each quote next to your current bill. Make sure you’re comparing the same number of lines and the features your household needs. A lower plan charge doesn’t tell the whole story if other charges sit outside it.
Also ask about one-time charges, such as activation. Keep those separate from the monthly total so you can see both the cost to start and the ongoing cost.
Hunt for fees, device payments and add-ons
Scan the bill or quote line by line. Administrative fees, insurance and streaming bundles are easy to miss when your eye lands on the plan rate first. Check for possible overage and roaming charges, too.
For each extra, ask: Do I use it? Do I want to keep it? What would the bill be without it? Don’t remove a service until you understand what you’d give up.
If you’re paying for a phone in installments, separate that payment from the service charge. Ask your current provider what remains on the device and what happens to that balance if you switch. Get the answer before comparing your final options.
Read the discount and promo terms
A quote may assume you qualify for a discount, such as one for autopay. Check the eligibility and requirements rather than assuming they apply to you. Ask for the total both with and without any discount you’re considering.
For a promotion, find out when it ends and what the bill will look like afterward. Promo expirations can raise the rate, so compare the ongoing cost as well as the starting cost.
Finally, read the plan’s contract terms and ask about any charges for leaving. Save the quote and terms so you can check the first bill against what you expected.
